Culture

When walking through the quiet, quaint, little village that Lanta Old Town is today, you might not immediately suspect that this was once the bustling centre of the island of Ko Lanta.

It was the calm waters that surround Old Town ,however , that made this part of the island a natural, safe harbor and initially encouraged the Sea Gypsies to settle here, followed by Muslim communities from the south and later, the Chinese Traders, who transformed the town into a thriving commercial port.

Each of these ethnic groups brought their own beliefs and traditions which they’ve passed on to each future generation. This is what makes Lanta Old Town the culturally diverse town it is today.

Both the Museum and the Laanta Lanta festival are dedicated to the different communities that make up the Lanta Old Town residents, and serve to celebrate the island’s history.
